"Anybody who knows my dad, Rex Blankenship, knows he is my hero. He was an ALL-Everything athlete who played both quarterback (started vs. Yale in The Game as a sophomore) and point guard in college at Harvard. That alone is enough to make one beam with pride. "When my FCA co-sponsor Kim Hayden and I brought a couple of station wagons full of our families and Greensburg (Indiana) High School young men to Estes Park in the 1980s we knew that the experience would be a great combination of inspiration and perspiration (!), but we didn't realize that we'd get teaching that would literally stick in our minds for decades. My wife and children, as well as the FCA boys, will never forget hearing hundreds of guys chanting "sin never wins/faith never fails/Christ crowns the champions/I'm pressing on" by the end of the week.
Your messages from Daniel 1-3 were so powerful, challenging, and encouraging that we bought a set of the cassette tapes to bring home and share with the students who hadn't attended the National Conference. And we continued to use them for huddle meetings through the 1990s for teaching and discussion. Scores of GHS students continued to hear and be blessed by your teaching for years.
Kim and I coached track together and led FCA until our retirements. In 2001 I started attending a Bible Study Fellowship class in nearby Columbus IN, which vastly expanded my understanding of biblical unity, doctrine, context, and authority. In 2009 I was called to become the Teaching Leader for the Columbus men's BSF class, and as I started to prepare for this new role that summer, one of the first steps I took was to listen again to your Daniel series. I'd always remembered the effectiveness of your having a clear basic message (which we now call the "big idea"), and the illustrations you used so effectively to make that message stick. So now your model was helping me to prepare a weekly lecture for hundreds of men in central Indiana.
That led to an opportunity to teach a short course on Genesis at a Bible college in Myanmar (a pastors/evangelists conference) in January 2019...so now your model was helping in a different hemisphere! I served as the teaching leader until January last year, when I was called to serve as an Area Advisor for men's BSF classes in Indiana and Kentucky. At age 67, it's a wonderful opportunity and privilege to encourage and assist godly men who are serving their classes with integrity and excellence.
